FAQs

Find quick answers to common questions.

Before You Paint

Everything you need to know before starting your project.

Do I need to sand before painting?

Usually, no. Chalk Paint® adheres to most surfaces without extensive prep, so sanding or priming is rarely necessary. For glossy finishes, laminate, melamine, or surfaces with residue, a light scuff sand can help improve adhesion.

Do I need primer?

Most projects don’t require primer. On older furniture, stained wood, or surfaces prone to tannin bleed-through, a coat of clear shellac or stain blocker may be needed before painting. Whites and light colors are the most likely to show bleed-through.

What surfaces can Chalk Paint® be used on?

Chalk Paint® works beautifully on furniture, cabinets, walls, floors, metal, brick, concrete, terracotta, and more. It adheres to almost any surface indoors or outdoors.

Can I paint laminate or IKEA furniture?

Yes — with a little prep. Lightly sand the surface, apply a thin first coat, and allow it to dry thoroughly before continuing. This helps the paint properly bond to slick surfaces like laminate or melamine.

How should I prep unfinished or stained wood?

If you’re painting new, untreated wood, apply a clear shellac onto any knots. If you see a stain bleeding through after you start painting, one or two coats of shellac will block the stain. It dries in minutes, and then you can get on with your painting.

Finish & Look

From smooth modern finishes to layered texture, Chalk Paint® is designed to be flexible, expressive, and easy to customize.

What does Chalk Paint® look like?

Chalk Paint® has a soft matte finish with visible depth and texture. It can be left smooth and modern or layered for a more artistic, timeworn look.

Will I see brush strokes?

Possibly — and that’s often part of the charm. Chalk Paint® is designed to be expressive and forgiving, whether you prefer a smooth contemporary finish or visible painterly texture.

Can I distress Chalk Paint®?

Absolutely. Chalk Paint® was designed with decorative finishes in mind. Light distressing with fine grit sandpaper creates a naturally aged appearance with very little effort.

Can I mix Chalk Paint® colors together?

Yes — the colors are intentionally designed for mixing. You can blend shades together to create softer tones, custom colors, or layered finishes unique to your project.

Durability & Protection

Learn when to use Wax or Lacquer, how finishes cure, and what to expect from everyday wear and use.

Do I need to seal Chalk Paint®?

Yes. Chalk Paint® should always be finished with either Wax or Lacquer for durability and protection.

Wax or Lacquer — which should I use?

Wax gives a soft, velvety finish ideal for furniture and decorative pieces. Lacquer offers stronger protection for floors or higher-traffic surfaces.

Is Chalk Paint® durable?

Very — especially once sealed properly. Waxed finishes continue curing over time and hold up beautifully to everyday use.

How long does Wax take to cure?

Wax dries quickly to the touch, but full curing typically takes between 5–21 days depending on temperature and humidity.

Is Chalk Paint® Wax food safe?

Once fully cured, Chalk Paint® Wax is considered food-safe and toy-safe.

Application

Brushes, coats, dry times, and techniques — everything you need for a smooth and successful project.

How many coats of Chalk Paint® do I need?

Most projects need one to two coats depending on the surface, color, and desired coverage. Dark surfaces may require additional coats.

Can I use a roller or sprayer?

Yes. Brushes create the most texture and depth, but Chalk Paint® can also be rolled or sprayed depending on the finish you want.

What's the best brush for Chalk Paint®?

Look for brushes with long, flexible bristles that hold plenty of paint. Natural bristle brushes are ideal for creating expressive texture and smooth coverage alike.

Color & Coverage

Coverage estimates, color mixing, opacity, and tips for choosing the right amount of paint for your project.

How much Chalk Paint® do I need?

As a general guide, one litre of Chalk Paint® covers approximately 150 square feet. Most furniture pieces require far less, depending on the size of the piece and the number of coats used.

Why does Pure sometimes need more coats?

Pure is a bright, clean white with very little pigment tinting, so it can sometimes appear more translucent than other colors. Applying an additional coat — or using Country Grey underneath — can improve coverage.

Can I mix Chalk Paint® colors together?

Yes. Chalk Paint® colors are designed to mix beautifully, making it easy to create softer tones, custom colors, or entirely unique shades for your project.

Why does the color look different after waxing?

Wax slightly deepens the color and adds richness to the finish, similar to how water deepens natural wood or stone.

What's the best way to choose a color?

Consider the lighting in your space, the mood you want to create, and the other finishes nearby. Warm neutrals tend to feel soft and organic, while cooler tones create more contrast and drama.
